Saltillo, Coahuila: Where Switzerland and Greece meet at last
This most ancient Spanish settlement in Northern Mexico was once the capital of a vast territory comprising the actual State of Texas. It was notorious as the birthplace of many intellectuals in the post-Independence era, and deserved the nickname of the Athens of Mexico.
The glorious history of Saltillo is still present nowadays in the historic centre, and the dynamic development of the past decades have helped to revive the refinement of the old days, now most visible in world-class hotels and attractions.
Moreover, Saltillo is located at the heart of a region where the natural surroundings are humbling, and powerful mountains covered in luscious forests overlook the desert plains.
Just outside Saltillo proper, in the Arteaga area, you will even find Mexico's one and only ski hill! This microclimate area has even been nicknamed the "Switzerland of Mexico". |
