Morelia, Michoacán: following the Monarchs

Morelia is nicknamed in Spanish "The Aristocrat of the Colonial Towns". With the distinctive touch it owes to its pink-toned stone monuments, it certainly lives to its reputation of being a unique and distinguished town at the heart of Mexico.

Morelia's world-class beauty -the downtown area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site- is perhaps only equalled by the natural marvels of the state of Michoacán. A new World Heritage Site was in fact established last July, when the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve also entered the prestigious UNESCO list as Mexico's 29th World Heritage Site.

If golfing in the area during the winter months, you are sure to observe the unique spectacle of Monarchs by the thousands, returning home after a summer spent in Eastern Canada and United States.

Among other famed residents, Morelia was the birthplace of José María Morelos, a Mexican Independence hero and prominent liberal thinker. A local attraction is his first house, the Museo Casa Natal de Morelos, a beautiful baroque mansion filled with personal objects and writings from the revolutionary, as well as antique furniture and paintings.
Morelia also has a well-deserved reputation as a gastronomic capital in Mexico, and many restaurants specialize in the most refined versions of regional and national specialties. The variety of flavours of the regional cuisine of Michoacán is endless, and definitely worth exploring.
